Auto insurance is one of the fastest-moving lines an agent can work. Shoppers usually have a specific trigger, they often want an answer the same day, and many will go with the first agent who gives them a clear quote and a reason to trust it. Here is a simple, repeatable way to take an auto lead from your inbox to a bound policy.
Step 1: Read the lead before you dial
Take thirty seconds to look at what you were sent. Note the vehicle, whether the shopper is currently insured, and how many drivers are in the household. If your quoting system allows it, start entering what you know. Opening the call with their details already in front of you makes you sound prepared, because you are.
Step 2: Call quickly and say why
Call as soon as you can after the lead arrives. Introduce yourself as a licensed agent, mention the quote they just requested and ask if now is a good time. If it is not, agree a specific time to call back and keep to it.
Step 3: Find the reason they are shopping
Before you quote, ask one open question: “What made you look for a new quote today?” The answer shapes everything that follows.
- If their rate went up, they want to see savings and understand why your quote differs.
- If they bought a new car, they need coverage in place by a certain date.
- If they had a bad service experience, they care about how reachable you are.
- If they are newly licensed or newly uninsured, they may need more explanation and patience.
Write the reason down. You will use it when you present the quote and again if you need to follow up.
Step 4: Confirm the facts
Verify the details that affect the quote: drivers, vehicles, address, current coverage limits and any recent claims or violations. Be matter-of-fact about it. Accurate information now avoids an uncomfortable call later when the price changes.
Step 5: Present the quote in plain language
Do not just read a number. Explain what the shopper is getting in terms they would use themselves. Compare like with like: if their current policy has lower limits than your quote, say so, and offer a matching option so the comparison is fair.
Tie the quote back to their reason for shopping. If they came to you because of a rate increase, lead with the price. If they came because of poor service, lead with how they can reach you.
Step 6: Ask for the decision
Many agents present a good quote and then wait. Ask directly and politely: “Would you like me to get this started today?” If the answer is yes, move straight to the application. If it is “I need to think about it”, ask what they would like to consider and offer to send the quote in writing.
Step 7: Follow up with a purpose
If the shopper is not ready, agree the next step before you hang up. “I will email this over now and call you Thursday afternoon. Does that work?” A follow-up the shopper has agreed to is welcome. A follow-up they were not expecting feels like pressure.
When you call back, refer to the reason they gave you in step three. It shows you listened and it brings the conversation back to what matters to them.
Step 8: Round out the account
Once the auto policy is bound, ask about the rest of the household. Do they own or rent? Is there another vehicle or driver? An auto lead is often the start of a multi-policy relationship, and the best time to ask is when you have just solved one problem well.
Keep notes on what works
After a few weeks, look back over your auto leads. Which opening lines got people talking? Which reasons for shopping converted most often? Small adjustments based on your own results will do more for your close rate than any script.
